Seattle Kraken is an American professional ice hockey team that competes in the Western Conference of the National Hockey League (NHL). Based in Seattle, Washington, the Kraken joined the NHL as an expansion team in 2021, marking the return of top-flight professional ice hockey to the city after nearly a century. The team's name is inspired by the legendary sea monster from Scandinavian folklore and the giant Pacific octopus native to Puget Sound. The Kraken's home games are held at Climate Pledge Arena, which underwent significant renovations and reopened in 2021. This venue, previously known as KeyArena, was renamed following a corporate pledge by Amazon.com to promote sustainability. The Kraken's inaugural season in 2021-22 did not meet the high expectations set by the Vegas Golden Knights, another recent expansion team, as they finished last in the Pacific Division with only 27 wins out of 82 games. Despite this rocky start, the Seattle Kraken continues to build its identity and fan base in the vibrant hockey community of Seattle.
